Lowest elevation lands in Minnesota are colored in shades of green. This includes the vast Red River Valley along the northern west border with the Dakotas and the Minnesota River and Mississippi River valleys in the south-central plains, the area where the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and the surrounding metro area is located.
Warm colors (golden yellow, orange, and red) denote that elevation is in a mid-level range. This includes Minnesota's southeastern corner (including the city of Rochester), and much of north and central Minnesota.
Minnesota's highest elevation lands are colored with blue and purple, with the color white used for the absolute highest peaks. There are three distinct high areas in the state: The southwest corner, near Worthington and Marshall; The north-central part between Detroit Lakes and Bemidji; and the Northeast corner of the state near the Lake Superior border. It's this third high area that contains Minnesota's highest point: Eagle Mountain at an elevation of 2,302 ft or 701 m.
